When PGA Tour pros teed it up on the North Course at Angus Glen in 2007 for the Canadian Open they were greeted by fairways lined with jagged, fescue-covered dunes, and riddled with three to four foot sod wall bunkers. Like the thousands of everyday golfers who enjoy playing it on a regular basis, Open winner Jim Furyk had only good things to say about the course. Our design team collaborated with American golf course architect Jay Morrish on this project. We chose to go with more of a links concept for the second course at Angus Glen since the land tended to be a bit more open than the South Course. With few trees to be found and generous fairways, fescue is the course’s main line of defence. The green complexes are heavily bunkered and closely mown grass roll-off collars call for a creative short game to score well. The massive ponds that come into play on holes 11 through 15 were designed specifically to capture water on the site for irrigation and to conform to provincial Ministry of the Environment guidelines.
