Situated near one of the largest water hazards on eart h, one would expect water to be front and centre at Legends on the Niagara. For the Battlefield Course we devised an expansive 19.4-acre irrigation pond for the entire 45-hole facility that plays into the strategic design of holes seven through nine an d a thundering finisher on No. 18.

On this project we worked closely with the Niagara Parks Commission. The site proved to be challenging to work with because it was extremely flat and clay-based that made drainage a priority.

Battlefield was designed to complement the Commission’s other legendary golf course, Stanley Thompson’s Whirlpool Golf Club. For that reason we fashioned spacious landing areas that cut in and out of wooded areas and bracketed those fairways with intricate bunkering to enhance the visual character of the course - all within a traditional parkland feel.

Since opening, Legends on the Niagara has established itself as the area’s No. 1 golf facility and is home to the highly acclaimed Jim McLean Golf School. It also set the stage for the development of the Niagara Golf Trail. Battlefield hosted the LPGA 2004 BMO Canadian Women’s Open won by Meg Mallon. Its name is derived from a 250-acre preserved battlefield from the War of 1812 that is adjacent to the course.
