Ballantrae Golf Club is the first and only golf course in Canada to be designated an Audubon International Signature Sanctuary and we worked within those guidelines to develop a progressive and environmentally friendly development. Not surprisingly, 75 per cent of this compact 420-acre, 900-unit adult lifestyle condominium community project is open green space, including a very walkable course design.

Again, our design team faced the challenge of delicately balancing the developers’ desire to maximize frontage on the golf course for homes, while fashioning a challenging layout with its own distinctive character. In a unique twist, we designed a ring road that winds through the development creating an identity for the entire community with the look and feel of vast open green space. However, when golfers arrive at Ballantrae we tried to create a true feeling of being at a golf club. Our design team achieved this by locating the outward and inward holes on both nines around the clubhouse with the practice area just steps away.

Working with the planning and engineering team, the entire site was designed and engineered for maximum efficiency in water usage. A combination of storm water, ground water and recycled effluent, is used to water the golf course and adjacent residential properties. The community also has its own sewage treatment plant. All wastewater from the homes is purified on site, pumped into holding ponds, tested at provincially approved laboratories and then fed into an irrigation pond and used to water the golf course.
