Eagles Nest Golf Club
Maple, Ontario. Canada. (2004)
One of the most stunning courses to open in Canada in recent memory, Eagles Nest, located just north of Toronto , is a striking golf course full of rolling dunes, tumbling fairways and huge shifts in elevation. But what is most striking is the course looks like it was transplanted from the Scottish coast. Imagine taking Scotland’s Cruden Bay or Royal Aberdeen and moving them to Ontario . The only thing that would make it more authentic is if the ocean could be relocated to Maple.
The amazing truth behind Eagles Nest is that it was manufactured out of the imagination of Doug and his team. Until Doug arrived on site, the land was plain and lacking any significant topographic features. The amazing contours of Eagles Nest, with it perched tees and large, rolling greens, were all conceived by Carrick Design.
While a daunting task from the tips, where it plays nearly 7,500 yards, Doug’s ingenious use of fairway hazards and natural “blowout” style bunkering means the course is a stiff challenge for low handicappers and remarkably enjoyable for more casual golfers at the same time.
“If you build it they will come,” says Euan Dougal, Eagles Nest’s director of golf. “But if you build it really well, more will come. This is pure golf and you’re going to have to play every shot you can think of.”
