<image:caption>Ballantrae Golf & Country Club, Ballantrae, Ontario Ballantrae Golf & Country Club is the first and only golf course in Canada to be designated an Audubon International Signature Sanctuary. This environmentally friendly, adult lifestyle community of 900 homes features a compact and efficient design, with over 75 per cent of the 420-acre site preserved as open green space. Working in close collaboration with the planning and engineering team, the entire site was designed and engineered for maximum efficiency in water usage. A combination of storm water, ground water and recycled effluent, is used to irrigate the golf course and adjacent residential properties. The community also has its own sewage treatment plant. All wastewater from the homes is purified on site, pumped into holding ponds and tested at provincially approved laboratories, before being applied to the golf course. The gently rolling terrain was well suited for the design of a walking friendly layout that appeals to the active lifestyle of Ballantrae residents. The generous sweeping fairways, gently undulating green surfaces and close mown chipping areas provide a well - balanced challenge for golfers of all abilities. A unique ring road encircles the 1st, 9th, 10th and 18th holes that surround the clubhouse area, creating a very distinctive “green” identity for the entire community.</image:caption>

Multiple tee locations featuring alternate lines of play, vary the playing experience for golfers who decide to play 18 holes. Subtly contoured greens, undulating fairways and sprawling bunkers enhance the rural countryside setting of the course.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Twin Rivers Golf Course, Terra Nova National Park, Newfoundland The original nine-hole course, designed by Robbie Robinson, opened officially in August 1981, as a public golf course designed to increase visitation to the Terra Nova National Park. In 1989 Carrick Design were retained to expand the course to 18 holes. Working with an intimate knowledge of Robinson’s design philosophy, the second nine was integrated with the original holes to take full advantage of the spectacular scenery along Clode Sound. The continuous 18 - hole routing features a spectacular par 5 stretched along an ocean inlet, a dramatic downhill par three across a ragging waterfall and six holes winding along the magnificent Northwest River. The contrast of the emerald fairways and greens set against the rugged beauty of the forest, rivers and ocean, complete with sightings of moose, owls, bald eagles and salmon, make Twin Rivers a truly unique wilderness golf experience unlike any other in Canada. Building a golf course in one of Canada’s National Parks presented many challenges including rigorous environmental guidelines designed to protect Atlantic salmon habitat, along with other indigenous wildlife and vegetation.</image:caption>

Situated in a beautiful valley west of Budapest, The Pannonia Golf & Country Club is considered to be to finest golf course in Hungary. The course was co-designed with Austrian golf course architect Hans Erhardt. Carrick Design’s involvement included co-design of the course routing, development of detailed grading plans and several site visits during construction. When it opened in 1990, King Valley was immediately recognised by Golf Digest as the 2nd Best New Course in Canada. The classic parkland design weaves through a mature landscape of rolling hills, pine and deciduous forests and diverse wetlands. The small sloping greens are protected by deep, artfully sculpted bunkers and calls for a variety of creative shot making. King Valley quickly earned a reputation as one of the premier private Clubs in the GTA and remains among the elite in Canada, serving as ClubLink Corporation Headquarters and as their “Flagship” Course. King Valley Golf Club was ranked the 2nd Best New Golf Course in Canada by Golf Digest in 1991.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Greystone Golf Club, Milton, Ontario Nestled into the rolling hills below the dramatic cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment, Greystone is a graceful parkland layout featuring dramatic views of the surrounding countryside and even the skyline of Toronto more than 30 miles away. A small, diverse group of businessmen who were passionate about the game of golf, purchased the former horse farm with a vision of creating an exclusive club for golfers who shared the same passion for the game. The undulating terrain, magnificent specimen trees, dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views of the Niagara Escarpment and surrounding countryside provided the perfect canvas of natural features on which to build upon. Using the long natural flowing lines of the escarpment as inspiration, the course was sculpted sensitively into the natural landscape. Numerous environmental issues including landform preservation, added to the complexity of the design process. Working in cooperation with a number of environmental agencies, a sensitive routing was developed to preserve the integrity of the Niagara Escarpment. The course provides an exciting challenge for golfers of all skill levels with medium-sized greens, steep-faced bunkers and a number of strategically placed water hazards. One of the most captivating features of Greystone are the numerous optical illusions on many of the putting surfaces against the massive backdrop of the Niagara Escarpment. Greystone was ranked the 3rd Best New Course in Canada by Golf Digest in 1992.</image:caption>

<image:caption>RiverBend Golf Community, London, Ontario Surrounded by the beautiful Kains Woods, RiverBend began as a dream for Mowbray Sifton, founder of Sifton Properties Ltd, over 50 years ago. He envisioned a community submerged in nature and designed for the golf enthusiast, with carefree new homes and the finest amenities for people approaching retirement who wanted to continue to live an active lifestyle. With the help of his sons, Mowbray’s dream has become a reality – and one of southwestern Ontario’s most desired addresses. Since its inception, the preservation of the community’s natural surroundings and wildlife has been top priority. In 2006, RiverBend Golf Community achieved designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, an award winning education and certification program that helps golf courses protect the environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. To achieve certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas including: environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, chemical use reduction and safety, water conservation and water quality management. The integrated golf & residential development was sensitively designed to preserve a rare parcel of Carolinian forest that borders the scenic Thames River. A number of significant native artefacts were also preserved during the construction of the course. The natural feel of the golf course was retained by limiting home frontage primarily to one side of the fairways on only a limited number of holes, so that golfer’s aren’t overwhelmed by the surrounding development. This fine balance between golf and real estate provides golfers with a relaxing golf experience, while adding value and privacy for homeowners. The golf course is an inspiring test of golf off the back tees for skilled golfers and an enjoyable challenge for the majority of members, from the three additional sets of tees.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mandarin Golf & Country Club, Markham, Ontario The Mandarin Golf & Country Club was the brainchild of four prominent businessmen from the Mandarin Club of Toronto. The former 18-hole Windmills Executive Golf Course was re-designed into a challenging, compact championship layout that went on to host the Canadian PGA Championship in 1996 and 1997. The flat 135-acre property presented many design challenges including floodplain concerns that required detailed hydraulic modelling to ensure that none of the neighbouring properties would be impacted by the water flow through the golf course. Mandarin is a modern version of the old classic style of golf courses built in the 1920s and 1930s and as a result it has a timeless feel, with generous sweeping fairways, artistically sculpted bunkers and subtly contoured greens.</image:caption>
