Building a golf course in one of Canada’s National Parks comes with its own set of unique challenges including rigorous environmental guidelines that we paid close attention to in order to respect and protect salmon habitat, as well as other wildlife habitat and vegetation.

The nine-hole Robbie Robinson design officially opened in August 1981 as a public course in Terra Nova National Park. I had apprenticed with Robinson early in my career so when the offer to finish one of his projects was made in 1989 I couldn’t say no to the opportunity. We reworked some of the existing holes to make them more player-friendly while trying to capture the wilderness feel of the land into the golf course.

The contrast of the emerald fairways and greens set against the dramatic and rugged beauty of the forest, rivers, and ocean, complete with moose, bald eagles and salmon, make Twin Rivers a truly unique experience. The course crosses two salmon rivers that flow to the Atlantic Ocean, the Northwest River and Salmon Brooke.
